Sick & Urgent Care in Manistee, MI
At Manistee Veterinary Hospital, our veterinary team does our best to fit in same-day appointments for dogs and cats with urgent problems during our business hours, so your pet can get care when it matters.
Understanding Sick & Urgent Care
If your pet is vomiting, not eating, limping, or simply not acting like themselves, don’t wait to reach out. Sick and urgent care visits are for problems that come up between regular checkups and shouldn’t wait for a routine appointment. Pets often hide illness, so by the time you notice a change, it’s worth having it checked.
Always call us first at (231) 723-9000. Our team will ask what you’re seeing and help decide the right next step, then work to fit your pet in as soon as we can. Manistee Veterinary Hospital is not an emergency hospital and does not have an after-hours line. If your pet has a life-threatening emergency outside our business hours, go to the nearest emergency veterinary hospital, and call ahead so they can get ready for your arrival.

What to Expect During Sick & Urgent Care
When your pet isn’t feeling well, our goal is to find out why and help them feel better. Here’s what a sick or urgent care visit looks like at Manistee Veterinary Hospital.
A Call to Our Team
When you call, we’ll ask what you’re seeing, when it started, and whether your pet is eating, drinking, and acting normally. Those details help us figure out how soon your pet should be seen and whether there’s anything you should do before you arrive.
Curbside Check-In
When you arrive, call us to let us know you’re here, then wait in your vehicle or outdoors until your exam room is ready. There’s no lobby waiting, which keeps things calmer for sick pets.
Exam and Diagnostics
Your veterinarian will examine your pet from nose to tail and go over the history with you. Depending on what they find, they may recommend tests, such as lab work or x-rays, to look for the cause. They’ll explain why each test is suggested before anything is done.
Treatment and Home Care
Your veterinarian will explain what they found, talk through treatment options, and make sure you know how to care for your pet at home. We’ll also tell you what signs mean you should call us back.

Why Sick & Urgent Care is Important for Your Pet
Some problems can wait for a regular appointment, and some can’t. Prompt care can keep a minor issue from becoming a serious one, ease your pet’s discomfort sooner, and give you a clear plan instead of uncertainty. When in doubt, calling our team is always the right first step.
Faster Relief
Seeing your pet promptly means pain, nausea, or other symptoms can be treated sooner, so your pet can start feeling more like themselves. Many problems are also simpler to treat when they’re caught early.
Finding the Cause
With our in-house laboratory and digital radiographs, our team can look for the reason behind your pet’s symptoms and choose treatment based on what we find.
Preventing Complications
Problems such as dehydration from ongoing vomiting or a cat not eating can become serious quickly. Early care helps keep your pet from getting sicker and can mean a quicker recovery at home.
Signs Your Pet May Need Sick & Urgent Care
Call us right away if your dog or cat has any of these signs:
- Trouble breathing, choking, or very pale or bluish gums
- A seizure, collapse, or sudden weakness
- Repeated vomiting, or vomiting or diarrhea with blood in it
- Swallowing something toxic, such as medication, antifreeze, or rodent bait
- Straining to urinate with little or nothing coming out, especially in male cats
Other urgent signs include a swollen belly with unproductive retching, bleeding that won’t stop, a deep wound, an eye injury, or signs of heatstroke. Outside our business hours, go to the nearest emergency veterinary hospital.
When Should Your Pet Receive Sick & Urgent Care?
Any time your pet’s behavior, appetite, or energy changes suddenly, it’s worth a call. If you’re not sure whether a symptom can wait, our team will help you decide. Regular wellness exams also help us know what’s normal for your pet, which makes it easier to spot problems early. After a sick visit, follow-up appointments may be recommended to make sure your pet is recovering as expected. If symptoms return or get worse, call us so we can take another look.

What does a sick visit cost, and how long does it take?

What should I do before bringing in my sick pet?
Call first. Note when symptoms started, any changes in food or routine, and your pet’s medications. If your pet may have swallowed something harmful, the AVMA advises calling right away and bringing the product packaging, along with anything your pet vomited or chewed. Source: AVMA
What conditions can sick and urgent care help with?
We see pets for vomiting, diarrhea, appetite loss, limping, and more.
